Nutrient Uptake by Woody Root Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
The fine-root system of perennial, dicot woody species can be dominated by brown roots. Although as much as 90% of the surface area of a root system can be in this category of roots, the nutrient uptake characteristics of brown roots are not well understood. If this part of the root system has active uptake, then its significance is obvious. If it does not then modelling predictions of nutrient uptake will need to account for this non-functional segment of the measured root system. The topic of nutrient management strategies in forest systems is crucial to the understanding and predictive modelling of soil nutrient availability to species with these root characteristics.

Estimating nitrogen uptake of individual roots in container- and field-grown plants using a N-depletion approach
We only have a limited understanding of the nutrient uptake physiology of individual roots as they age. Despite this shortcoming, the importance of nutrient uptake processes to our understanding of plant nutrition and nutrient cycling cannot be underestimated. In this study, we used a N depletion method that allowed for the measurement of nitrate-N uptake rates on intact, individual, fine roots...
متن کاملNutrient leaching from mixed-species Florida residential landscapes.
Nutrient losses from residential lawns and landscapes can negatively impact water quality. Information about nutrient leaching from established residential landscapes containing a mixture of woody ornamental plants and turfgrass is limited. The objective of our study was to determine the effect of vegetation cover (turfgrass vs. woody ornamental) on nutrient leaching from established landscapes...
متن کاملA STELLA Model to Estimate Water and Nitrogen Dynamics in a Short-Rotation Woody Crop Plantation.
Although short-rotation woody crop biomass production technology has demonstrated a promising potential to supply feedstocks for bioenergy production, the water and nutrient processes in the woody crop planation ecosystem are poorly understood. In this study, a computer model was developed to estimate the dynamics of water and nitrogen (N) species (e.g., NH-N, NO-N, particulate organic N, and s...
متن کاملDetermination of kinetic parameters for potassium uptake by wheat at different growth stages
Root influx parameters (Vmax and Km) of wheat (Triticum aestivum var. HD-2285) were determined at different stages of crop growth, viz. CRIS-Crown Root Initiation Stage, MTS-Maximum Tillering Stage, FLS-Flag Leaf Stage and DFS-Dough Formation Stage. Wheat was grown in sand medium with Hoagland nutrient solution (all nutrients except potassium). Plants were taken out from sand culture at 22, 41,...
متن کاملA mathematical model for water and nutrient uptake by plant root systems.
This article deals with modelling the simultaneous uptake of water and highly buffered nutrient, such as phosphate, by root branching structures from partially saturated soil. We use the simultaneous water and nutrient uptake model to investigate the effect that water movement has on nutrient uptake. With the aid of this model we are also able to show that the previous models by Barber and Tink...
